EMDR for PTSD, Trauma, Anxiety, & Panic Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing EMDR is an adjunctive psychotherapeutic approach utilized by a trained mental health professional. The technique was initially developed by Francine Shapiro Ph.D. in 1987. EMDR assists the client in processing upsetting or plaguing experiences, as well as integrating more constructive beliefs about self and the environment. Research has indicated that EMDR can process traumatic experiences more rapidly than traditional psychotherapeutic approaches. The primary treatment principal of EMDR is the alleviation of recurring psychological/emotional trauma originating from disturbing childhood experiences, such as abuse or neglect, parental rejection or significant grief and loss issues, etc. It works with dissociative disorders, emotional detachment, as well as intrusive or unsettling memories. EMDR can also alleviate post traumatic stress as a result of trauma associated with single episodic experiences. This technique can also be utilized to treat depression, anxiety issues such as panic attacks and phobias, as well as childhood distress and addiction issues. EMDR can also be applied for goal specific purposes toward increasing performance outcomes, decreasing performance anxiety, as well as stress reduction.
